Scripture Focus
“And they discussed it with one another, saying, ‘If we say, “From heaven,” he will say, “Why then did you not believe him?” But shall we say, “From man”?’—they were afraid of the people, for they all held that John really was a prophet. So they answered Jesus, ‘We do not know.’” — Mark 11:31–33 (ESV)
Devotional Thought
This moment reveals much about the human heart—especially the heart that resists truth. The religious leaders were not honestly wrestling with Jesus’ question. They weren’t seeking to discern whether John’s baptism truly came from God or from man. Instead, they were calculating how their answer would affect them. Their concern was not truth, but image; not conviction, but convenience.
They reasoned within themselves, “If we say this, Jesus will say that. If we say that, the people will react this way.” Notice what’s missing? Any mention of God. Their minds were occupied with strategy, not sincerity—with politics, not purity of heart.
When fear of man outweighs fear of God, truth inevitably becomes a casualty. The Pharisees’ refusal to answer honestly revealed their hypocrisy. They claimed to love God but were enslaved to public opinion. How often do we do the same? How often do we remain silent when speaking truth might cost us approval, comfort, or reputation?
To follow Jesus requires a heart that values truth over appearances. God is not impressed by clever reasoning or careful image management. He delights in hearts that are humble, honest, and courageous—hearts that will say, “Lord, whatever You say is true, and I will stand on it, no matter what others think.”
Reflection Questions
1. In what areas of your life are you tempted to care more about what others think than what God says?
2. How can you grow in courage to speak truth even when it’s unpopular?
3. What does your reasoning reveal about what you truly value?
Closing Prayer
Father, help me to love Your truth more than I love my own image. Forgive me when I let fear of others silence my witness or distort my judgment. Give me courage to stand on what is true, even when it costs me. May my reasoning reflect a heart that seeks to please You above all else. In Jesus’ name, amen.
