Scripture Focus
“Do not give dogs what is holy, and do not throw your pearls before pigs, lest they trample them underfoot and turn to attack you.” – Matthew 7:6 (ESV)
Devotional Thought
At first glance, Jesus’ words in this verse can feel harsh. Yet when we look deeper, we see His wisdom and care. He is not telling us to withhold the gospel or to treat people with contempt. Instead, He warns us about discernment—about recognizing when truth will not be received.
Imagine throwing a pearl to a pig. To us, a pearl is priceless. To a pig, it’s just a useless object—something disappointing because it can’t be eaten. Likewise, when a hardened heart refuses to see the value of God’s Word, even the most precious truths can be rejected, ridiculed, or twisted into an attack against the one who shared it.
This doesn’t mean we stop proclaiming Christ. The gospel is for all people, and God can soften any heart. But it does mean we pray for discernment. There are moments when continued arguing or pressing truth on someone who is unwilling to listen does more harm than good. Our task is not to force truth but to faithfully bear witness, leaving the results to God.
Pearls are still pearls, whether received or rejected. God’s Word remains holy and powerful, even when despised. Our role is to handle it with reverence and wisdom—sharing it boldly, yet with the humility to step back when rejection is clear.
Reflection Questions
- Do I approach the Word of God as a precious pearl, treating it with reverence?
- Am I discerning when to press forward in conversations about faith and when to quietly entrust someone to God’s timing?
- How can I share truth with both boldness and wisdom today?
Closing Prayer
Lord, thank You for the gift of Your Word—more valuable than pearls, more nourishing than bread. Give me discernment to know when to speak and when to wait. Keep me from pride or frustration when Your truth is rejected. Help me to treasure Your Word in my own life and to share it with love, patience, and wisdom. Amen.
