Scripture Focus
“But thanks be to God, that you who were once slaves of sin have become obedient from the heart to the standard of teaching to which you were committed, 18 and, having been set free from sin, have become slaves of righteousness.” – Romans 6:17–18 (ESV)
Devotional Thought
Before Christ, we were bound in chains to sin. But through His death and resurrection, those chains were broken. Now, Paul reminds us that freedom from sin doesn’t mean living without boundaries—it means a new kind of servanthood: becoming slaves of righteousness.
It’s easy to fall Into one of two traps: legalism, where we measure our worth by how well we keep the rules, or lawlessness, where we excuse our sin because of grace. Neither reflects the heart of the gospel. The answer is not found in swinging between extremes, but in walking daily with Jesus.
True obedience is not about checking boxes on a spiritual list—it is about loving Christ enough to follow Him. Grace doesn’t excuse sin; it empowers us to walk in righteousness. As Paul teaches, our lives are no longer our own—we belong to the Lord. And in belonging to Him, we find true freedom.
Reflection Questions
1. Am I more prone to fall into legalism or to excuse sin under the banner of grace?
2. What does it mean in my daily life to live as a “slave of righteousness”?
3. How can focusing on Christ Himself, rather than rules or excuses, transform my obedience?
4. In what areas do I need to surrender more fully to Jesus’ lordship today?
Closing Prayer
Lord Jesus, thank You for freeing me from the chains of sin and making me Your own. Guard me from both legalism and careless living, and teach me to walk in the freedom of grace that leads to obedience. Help me to delight in being Your servant, to listen for Your voice, and to follow You wholeheartedly. May my life reflect the righteousness that comes only from You. In Your name, Amen.
