This World Is not Your Home

Scripture Focus

“For many, of whom I have often told you and now tell you even with tears, walk as enemies of the cross of Christ. Their end is destruction, their god is their belly, and they glory in their shame, with minds set on earthly things. But our citizenship is in heaven, and from it we await a Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ.”– Philippians 3:18–20 (ESV)

Devotional Thought

Life has a way of pulling our attention downward—toward distractions, desires, and temporary pleasures. Paul warns that many live as “enemies of the cross,” consumed by earthly things, and in doing so, they forfeit their eternal focus. But believers are called to something different.

Paul reminds us that our citizenship is not here—it is in heaven. That means our loyalty, identity, and ultimate hope are not tied to this world but to Christ. When we forget this, we risk becoming ineffective for the Kingdom, like salt that has lost its flavor (Matthew 5:13). The more we blend into the culture of sin around us, the less we reflect the Savior who has redeemed us.

Living as citizens of heaven means we walk through this life with open hands—using what God has given us, but not clinging to it as if this world were our final destination. It means our decisions, values, and desires should be shaped not by what pleases the flesh but by what glorifies Christ.

Paul summed up his life’s aim in this same chapter: “I want to know Christ and the power of His resurrection” (Phil. 3:10). That must be ours too. To know Him, obey Him, and live with heaven in view—that is how we keep perspective in a world that constantly tries to make us forget.

Reflection Questions

1. What “earthly things” most often distract your heart and mind from your true citizenship in heaven?

2. How does remembering that your home is in heaven affect the way you handle daily challenges and temptations?

3. In what ways can you live more like “salt and light” this week so that your life points others to Christ?

4. Can you honestly say your deepest desire is “to know Christ”? If not, what is competing for that place in your heart?

Closing Prayer

Father, thank You for reminding me that this world is not my home. Forgive me for the times I have allowed earthly things to consume my attention and weaken my witness. Teach me to live as a true citizen of heaven, longing for Christ’s return and seeking to know Him above all else. Help me to resist the pull of the flesh and instead walk in the power of Your Spirit. May my life be salty, bright, and effective for Your Kingdom until the day I see Jesus face to face. In His name I pray, Amen.
