The Limits of Sight

“For we walk by faith, not by sight.” – 2 Corinthians 5:7 (ESV)

Devotional Thought

Our natural instinct is to trust what we can see, touch, or measure. The problem is that sight has limits. Sight tells us only what is immediate and visible. It cannot see beyond death. It cannot explain God’s invisible hand at work in trials. It cannot perceive the eternal realities that are promised but not yet fulfilled.

Paul warns against living only by sight, because sight alone leads to hopelessness. When we trust only what we can see, we panic when life spirals out of our control. We despair when the doctor gives a bad report. We doubt when our prayers seem unanswered. We rely on human strength and lose courage when it proves insufficient.

But God has called us to something better. Sight may be useful, but faith is essential. Faith anchors us to the unseen reality of God’s promises. Hebrews 11:1 reminds us that faith is the assurance of things hoped for and the conviction of things not seen. Walking by sight alone leaves us blind to eternal truth. Walking by faith opens our eyes to the greater reality that God is present, powerful, and faithful even when we cannot see Him at work.

Reflection Questions

1. When are you most tempted to rely on sight instead of faith?

2. How has God proven Himself faithful in times when you could not see a way forward?

Closing Prayer

Lord, I confess that I often trust in what I can see more than in what You have promised. Strengthen my faith to walk confidently in Your Word even when circumstances seem uncertain. Open my eyes to the unseen reality of Your presence and power. Amen.
