“For in this tent we groan, longing to put on our heavenly dwelling.” – 2 Corinthians 5:2 (ESV)
Devotional Thought
Every human being knows what it is to groan. We groan under the weight of pain, disappointment, weakness, and brokenness. Paul describes this as the experience of living in our earthly tent. Our bodies decay. Our strength fails. Sin clings to us and tempts us in ways that often leave us frustrated and discouraged. Even when we resist temptation, we see the consequences of sin in broken relationships, guilt, shame, and regret.
Yet Paul reminds us that this groaning is not pointless—it has a direction. We groan because we are longing for something more. The aches of our bodies and the struggles of our souls stir within us a holy dissatisfaction with life as it is. We yearn for the heavenly dwelling that God has promised, for a body free from weakness, for fellowship unbroken by sin, for joy unhindered by sorrow. Romans 8:23 says that all creation groans, but believers especially groan inwardly as we wait eagerly for the redemption of our bodies.
This longing is a mark of spiritual maturity. As we grow in Christ, we don’t become more comfortable with sin; we hate it more. We don’t cling to this life as if it’s all there is; we look forward to what God has prepared. The groaning is real, but it’s also hopeful, because it keeps our eyes fixed on the glory that is coming.

Closing Prayer
Father, I confess my weakness and my weariness in this body. Yet I thank You that my groans are not empty cries but reminders of the glory that awaits. Teach me to live with hope, to fight sin with resolve, and to long for the day when You will clothe me with immortality. Until then, strengthen me to walk faithfully in Your Spirit. Amen.
