“Who is sufficient for these things?” – 2 Corinthians 2:16b

Devotional Thought

After describing the weighty calling of spreading the fragrance of Christ, Paul pauses and asks a humbling question: “Who is sufficient for these things?” The honest answer is obvious—none of us. Representing Christ in a broken world is too great a task for human strength.

This is a freeing truth. Paul doesn’t minimize the responsibility but acknowledges our inadequacy. On our own, we can’t change hearts, bear eternal fruit, or endure the opposition that comes with following Jesus.

Left to ourselves, we’d give up, water down the message, or shrink back in fear. But here’s the hope: the God who calls us also equips us. Our sufficiency comes not from ourselves, but from Him (2 Corinthians 3:5).

Think about it: Moses doubted his ability to speak, Gideon called himself the least of his tribe, Jeremiah felt too young, and Peter failed miserably. Yet God used each one mightily, not because they were sufficient, but because He was. The pattern is the same today. God delights to use weak vessels to display His surpassing power.

This means your sense of inadequacy is not a disqualification—it may actually be the very thing that prepares you to depend on Him. When you step out in obedience despite your weakness, God receives the glory. You don’t need to have all the answers, the perfect words, or flawless strength. You simply need to abide in Christ, trusting His Spirit to work through you.

So, who is sufficient? Not us. But God is. And He makes us adequate for every calling He places before us.

Reflection Questions

1. In what areas of your life or ministry do you feel most insufficient?

2. How have you seen God’s strength displayed in your weakness?

3. What step of faith is God asking you to take, relying on His sufficiency?

Closing Prayer

Lord, I confess my insufficiency. I cannot bear the fragrance of Christ in my own strength. But thank You that Your grace is enough and Your Spirit makes me adequate for every calling. Teach me to lean fully on You and to trust that You will accomplish Your purposes through me. Amen.
