Scripture Focus
“…through us spreads the fragrance of the knowledge of him everywhere. For we are the aroma of Christ to God among those who are being saved and among those who are perishing, to one a fragrance from death to death, to the other a fragrance from life to life.” – 2 Corinthians 2:14b–16a
Devotional Thought
Paul paints a vivid picture: believers carry the fragrance of Christ wherever they go. Just as a sweet aroma fills a room, the presence of Christ in His people cannot be hidden. The world encounters the knowledge of Jesus through us.
But Paul adds a sobering truth—this fragrance is received differently depending on the heart of the hearer. To those being saved, it is the scent of life, hope, and grace. To those rejecting Christ, it is the smell of death, a reminder of judgment. The same gospel that saves some offends others.
This explains why some are drawn to your faith while others recoil. You don’t have to preach a sermon—your life itself gives off the fragrance of Christ. Your kindness, your integrity, your refusal to compromise, your joy in trials—these are the scents of heaven. For some, it will spark curiosity and hunger for the gospel. For others, it may provoke discomfort or even hostility.
The key is this: our calling is not to change the fragrance but to faithfully bear it. We don’t dilute the gospel to make it more palatable, nor do we hide it to avoid rejection. We live openly for Christ, trusting that God will use our lives to spread His knowledge everywhere.
Are you conscious of the aroma your life carries? The more time you spend with Jesus in prayer, Scripture, and obedience, the stronger His fragrance clings to you. May those around us catch the unmistakable scent of Christ—and may it lead many to life.
Reflection Questions
1. In what ways does your daily life spread the fragrance of Christ?
2. How do you respond when people reject or resent your faith?
3. Who around you might God be drawing through the “aroma” of your witness?
Closing Prayer
Lord, make me a faithful bearer of Christ’s fragrance. Let my words and actions point others to You. Whether people receive or resist, may I live so closely with You that Your aroma is unmistakable in my life. Amen.
