📖 “All the days of the oppressed are wretched, but a cheerful heart has a continual feast.” – Proverbs 15:15
Devotional Thought
Have you ever slipped into the role of the “tortured saint”—complaining, frustrated, and convinced that life is against you? Proverbs reminds us that much of our “oppression” is a matter of perspective. When we see every inconvenience or trial as a personal attack, our days feel heavy and joyless.
But Solomon contrasts that outlook with the person who has “a cheerful heart.” This doesn’t mean they are spared from trials—it means they choose to respond with faith, gratitude, and trust in God. For them, life becomes a continual feast, even in hard times.
Paul, in Philppians 4:11-12, echoed this when he wrote that he had learned the secret of being content in any situation: Christ Himself was his source of strength and joy. The question for us is simple: Will we live as victims of circumstance, or as victors in Christ?
Reflection Questions
1. Do you tend to view difficulties as personal attacks, or as opportunities to grow in faith?
2. When was the last time you responded to hardship with joy instead of complaint?
3. What would it look like for you to “feast” on God’s goodness, even in trials?
4. How might choosing gratitude today shift your entire perspective?
Closing Prayer
Lord, forgive me for the times I have complained and chosen bitterness over joy. Teach me to see life’s trials not as oppression, but as opportunities to trust You more deeply. Give me a cheerful heart that finds contentment in Your presence, and let my life reflect the joy and strength found only in Christ. Help me to feast on Your goodness today, no matter what I face. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
