God Doesn’t Want to Be Your Last Resort

Scripture Focus

The Lord is exalted, for he dwells on high; he will fill Zion with justice and righteousness, and he will be the stability of your times, abundance of salvation, wisdom, and knowledge; the fear of the Lord is Zion’s treasure.” – Isaiah 33:5-6 (ESV)

Devotional Thought

We live in a culture that prizes independence and self-reliance. We want to fix things ourselves, prove our strength, and only ask for help when there’s no other option. Sadly, many of us treat God the same way—turning to Him only after we’ve exhausted our strength, our reasoning, and our resources.

Israel did the same. They sent out their warriors, but they failed. They tried diplomacy, but it collapsed.

They relied on covenants, but those were broken. Only when everything else fell apart did God step in with His power and deliverance.

The truth is this: God doesn’t want to be our last resort—He wants to be our first response. When we come to Him immediately in faith, we not only avoid unnecessary exhaustion, but we also honor Him as the true source of wisdom, strength, and salvation. Waiting until we’ve burned out before seeking God is not faith—it’s pride in disguise.

Reflection Questions

1. When challenges arise, what is my first instinct—fix it myself, or turn to God?

2. In what areas of my life am I still relying on my own strength instead of surrendering to Him?

3. How might my faith grow if I chose to seek God first, instead of only after I’ve failed?

4. What practical step can I take today to make God my first response instead of my last resort?

Closing Prayer

Father, forgive me for the times I have placed my confidence in my own strength, plans, or wisdom before turning to You. Teach me to seek You first, not as a backup plan but as my only true source of help. Remind me daily that You are my stability, my salvation, and my strength. Lord, help me to walk in humility and dependence on You, trusting that when I am weak, then I am strong in You. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
