Devotional Thought
The passages from 2 Samuel and 1 Chronicles paint a picture of a desperate battle. Joab and his brother Abishai were surrounded—enemies pressing in from the front and the rear. At that moment, Joab challenged his brother with words that still echo today: “Be of good courage, and let us be courageous for our people, and for the cities of our God, and may the Lord do what seems good to him.”
This is the heartbeat of godly leadership. Men of God are not defined by titles or positions, but by readiness, courage, and a heart set on God’s purposes. Joab didn’t sugarcoat the battle—he admitted that it could go either way—but his confidence was ultimately placed in the Lord: “may the Lord do what seems good to him.”
Where are the men of God today? They are the ones preparing their hearts through Scripture, not waiting until the heat of battle to open God’s Word. They are the ones who stand with courage when their families, churches, and communities are threatened by sin or compromise. They are the ones who fight, not for their own glory, but for the sake of God’s people and His kingdom.
The writer of Hebrews described the heroes of faith as “men of whom the world was not worthy” (Heb. 11:38). That same kind of faith and courage is needed today. It may look like teaching your children the Word at home, standing firm against cultural pressure at work, or stepping into leadership when no one else will. It may mean fighting private battles against temptation that no one sees. Whatever the situation, men of God trust the Lord with the outcome and fight faithfully for His glory.
Questions for Reflection:
- Am I preparing myself daily in God’s Word so I will be ready when the battle comes?
- Where do I need to show more courage—at home, at work, in my church, or in my personal walk?
- Do I fight for my own reputation, or for the sake of my family, my church, and the honor of God?
- How can I better trust God with the outcome instead of trying to control it myself?
Closing Prayer:
Lord, raise up men of God in our generation. Make me one of them. Give me courage to fight for my family, my church, and Your kingdom. Help me prepare through Your Word so that when the battle comes, I will stand strong. Keep my eyes fixed on Jesus, who endured the cross and won the ultimate victory. May my life be lived for Your glory alone. Amen.
