Sacrificing the Sacred for Relevance

📖 “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.” – Hebrews 13:8

Devotional Thought

In our culture, bigger often feels better. Churches sometimes mirror this mindset—crafting services that appeal to certain groups, emphasizing what feels popular, casual, or exciting. While there’s nothing wrong with different styles of worship, the danger comes when our focus shifts from God to man.

When we attempt to make worship “relevant” by catering to human preferences, we risk putting entertainment where reverence should be. The truth is, God does not change. What was holy centuries ago is still holy today. The central issue is not whether a service feels contemporary, traditional, or casual—the issue is whether God Himself is at the center.

The writer of Hebrews reminds us that our confidence lies not in the trends of culture, but in the unchanging character of Christ. He is the same yesterday, today, and forever. Relevance fades, but the sacred remains eternal.

Reflection Questions

1. In my own walk with God, am I more concerned about His presence or about appearances?

2. How do I define “worship”—by a style of service, or by my posture before God?

3. Where might I be tempted to appeal to human approval rather than God’s glory?

4. Do I trust that Jesus’ unchanging truth is enough to draw people to Him, without my attempts to make it “more appealing”?

Closing Prayer

Lord, forgive me for the times I’ve been more concerned with pleasing people than honoring You. Help me remember that You are unchanging, and that true worship is centered on who You are, not on outward styles or trends. Teach me to keep You at the center of all I do, and may my life and worship point others to Your holiness and truth. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
