Is Salvation our Work or God’s?

Scripture Focus

📖 “Work out your salvation with fear and trembling, for it is God who is at work in you, both to will and to work for His good pleasure.” – Philippians 2:12–13

Devotional Thought

At first glance, Scripture can sometimes feel like it’s giving us two different instructions. Paul says to “work out your salvation with fear and trembling”—which sounds like it all depends on us. But in the very next breath, he says, “for it is God who is at work in you”—which sounds like it all depends on Him.

So, which is it? The answer is both.

God is the source of our salvation and the One who sustains our spiritual growth. Every ounce of fruit in our lives comes from His Spirit. Yet, at the same time, we are called to actively pursue holiness, to seek Him wholeheartedly, and to guard against drifting. Our effort is real, but it is fueled by His grace.

This is not contradiction—it’s cooperation. God works in us, and we respond by working out what He has already placed within us. Grace doesn’t make effort unnecessary; it makes it possible.

Reflection Questions

1. How do you usually lean—toward relying too much on your own effort, or toward passively waiting for God to do everything?

2. What does it mean for you personally to “work out your salvation with fear and trembling”?

3. How have you seen God’s grace empower your efforts to live faithfully?

4. Who in your life can you encourage today to both rest in God’s grace and actively pursue Him?

Closing Prayer Father, thank You that my salvation and growth are rooted in Your grace. Help me to never take that for granted or misuse it as an excuse for laziness. Teach me to walk in the balance of relying on You completely while giving You my whole heart, soul, mind, and strength. Strengthen me to keep pressing on when I grow weary, and remind me that it is You who works in me for Your good pleasure. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
