Living in Light of His Return

Scripture Focus
“…that you keep the commandment without fault or reproach until the appearing of our Lord Jesus Christ, which He will bring about at the proper time—He who is the blessed and only Sovereign, the King of kings and Lord of lords, who alone possesses immortality and dwells in unapproachable light, whom no one has seen or can see. To Him be honor and eternal dominion! Amen.” – 1 Timothy 6:14–16

Devotional Thought
Paul’s charge to Timothy is both simple and profound: “Keep the commandment.” In other words, live in obedience to Christ, walk in love, and make disciples. And how long must we do this? Until the appearing of our Lord Jesus Christ—or until death brings us into His presence. There is no retirement from faithful obedience.

But Paul quickly shifts the focus from our task to God’s sovereignty. The return of Christ will happen “at the proper time.” Not when we predict it. Not when some preacher claims to know the date. Jesus Himself said in Matthew 24:36 that no one knows the day or hour—not the angels, not even the Son, but only the Father. Our job is not to speculate but to stay faithful.

Why didn’t God give us the date? Because knowing it would do us no good. If the date were far away, people would become lazy and careless. If it were near, panic or obsession would distract from real obedience. Instead, we are called to live every day as if it might be the day we meet Christ face-to-face.

Paul reminds us that our hope rests in the One who is “the blessed and only Sovereign, the King of kings and Lord of lords.” His timing is perfect. His rule is eternal. His light is unapproachable. And when Jesus appears, it will be unmistakable—visible to all, joyous for believers, and terrifying for unbelievers (Revelation 1:7).

So what should we do now? Keep the commandment. Love God, love others, walk in obedience, and make disciples. Let’s stop obsessing over when and start focusing on how—how we live today, how we represent Christ, how we carry out His mission until the day He returns.

Reflection Questions

  1. Why do you think God chose not to reveal the exact time of Christ’s return?
  2. How might knowing a date for His return affect your priorities, either positively or negatively?
  3. Do you live each day with a sense of urgency, as though Christ could return at any moment?
  4. What does it mean for you personally to “keep the commandment” until the appearing of Christ?

Closing Prayer
Lord, You are the King of kings and Lord of lords. Thank You that Your timing is perfect and that the day of Christ’s return is secure in Your plan. Forgive me for the times I’ve been distracted by speculation or worldly pursuits. Help me to live faithfully, keeping the commandment to walk in love, obedience, and discipleship until the day I see Jesus face-to-face. Strengthen me to live with urgency and hope, bringing honor to Your name each day. Amen.
