What Is Hindering Your Prayers?

📖 “This is the confidence which we have before Him, that, if we ask anything according to His will, He hears us.” – 1 John 5:14

Devotional Thought

Prayer is one of the greatest privileges we have as believers, yet it can also be one of the greatest struggles. Sometimes our prayers feel powerful, as if God is responding before we even finish speaking. Other times, they feel like they bounce off the ceiling. Why is that?

Scripture gives us two key reasons. First, our will often gets in the way. Prayer is not about persuading God to give us what we want, but about aligning our desires with His. When we pray according to His will, Scripture promises He hears us.

Second, our words can trip us up. We sometimes try so hard to “get it right,” forgetting that God already knows our needs before we speak. Romans 8:26 reminds us that the Spirit Himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words. Prayer is not about eloquence—it’s about relationship.

The power of prayer is not found in us but in God. When we set aside our agendas and stop worrying about finding the perfect words, we discover the Spirit’s help and the Father’s heart.

Reflection Questions

1. Do you find yourself trying to convince God of your will instead of seeking His will?

2. In what ways have you treated prayer more like a wish list than a conversation with your Father?

3. How might your prayer life change if you trusted the Spirit to guide your prayers, even when you don’t know what to say?

4. What step can you take today to make your prayers more about listening and less about perfect words?

Closing Prayer

Father, forgive me for the times I have made prayer about my desires and my words instead of seeking Your will and Your presence. Teach me to come before You with a surrendered heart, trusting that the Spirit intercedes when I don’t know what to pray. Help me to listen more, speak less, and rest in the confidence that You hear and answer according to what is best. Align my heart with Yours today. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
