📖 “Forgetting what lies behind and reaching forward to what lies ahead, I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.” – Philippians 3:13–14
Devotional Thought
Failure and success are both dangerous when we stay stuck in them. After failure, it’s easy to wallow in guilt and shame, feeling unworthy to continue. After success, it’s tempting to relax, lower our guard, or even boast in our accomplishments. But Paul gives us a better way—forgetting what is behind and pressing on toward Christ.
Paul had both—terrible failures (persecuting the church) and incredible victories (preaching the gospel boldly). Yet, he refused to let either define him. His identity was not rooted in his past but in Christ’s call on his life.
The Christian life is about movement. Yesterday’s failure doesn’t cancel today’s grace, and yesterday’s success doesn’t guarantee today’s faithfulness. What matters is what direction we’re pressing in right now. God calls us to fix our eyes on Him, to get back up when we fall, and to keep moving forward.
Reflection Questions
1. Do you find it harder to move on from failure or from success? Why?
2. What “yesterday” are you still holding onto—something you need to let go so you can press on?
3. How would your daily walk with Christ change if you treated every day as a fresh opportunity to grow in Him?
4. What practical step can you take today to “reach forward to what lies ahead”?
Closing Prayer Lord, thank You for the reminder that my past does not define my future in You. Help me not to be trapped by failure or lulled into complacency by success. Teach me to walk humbly, to repent quickly, to rejoice in Your grace, and to keep pressing forward toward the prize of knowing Christ more deeply. Give me strength today to let go of what’s behind and to pursue You with all my heart. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
