📖 “For we are not bold to class or compare ourselves with some of those who commend themselves; but when they measure themselves by themselves and compare themselves with themselves, they are without understanding.” – 2 Corinthians 10:12
Devotional Thought
Success can be a wonderful blessing from God, but it can also become a subtle trap. After seasons of victory, we may begin to believe that we’ve “arrived.” This was exactly the problem Paul addressed in Corinth. The believers had experienced God’s salvation, His gifts, and His blessings—but instead of staying humble and dependent on Him, they became self-satisfied and prideful.
The danger of comparing ourselves with ourselves is that it creates a false sense of security. As long as we only measure by our own standards or our own circle, we’ll never see the areas where growth and repentance are still needed. Pride blinds us to the reality of our spiritual condition and can lead us to resist correction, even from godly voices around us.
True spiritual maturity recognizes that growth never ends this side of heaven. Paul himself admitted he had not yet attained perfection (Philippians 3:12–13). Remaining teachable, humble, and open to God’s ongoing work in us keeps us from prideful stagnation and positions us for deeper growth in Christ.
Reflection Questions
1. When have I been tempted to take pride in what God has done through me rather than giving Him full glory?
2. Do I ever measure my spiritual life only against people within my own circle rather than against God’s Word?
3. What “outside voices” (mentors, pastors, friends) has God placed in my life to challenge me, and am I willing to listen?
4. How can I cultivate humility so that I never become complacent in my walk with Christ?
Closing Prayer
Lord, forgive me for the times I have taken pride in what You have done instead of humbly giving You glory. Protect me from becoming spiritually self-satisfied and blind to my need for growth. Keep me teachable and open to correction from Your Word and from the people You place in my life. May I never compare myself with others for comfort, but only look to Christ as my standard. Keep me pressing forward toward maturity, always aware of my dependence on You. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
