How Teachable Are You?

Scripture Reading: Hebrews 12:7–11> “Endure hardship as discipline; God is treating you as sons. For what son is not disciplined by his father?… No discipline seems pleasant at the time, but painful. Later on, however, it produces a harvest of righteousness and peace for those who have been trained by it.”

Growth in Christ is rarely comfortable. God, as a loving Father, patiently shapes us through discipline — not to harm us, but to help us grow in holiness.

Recently, I was talking with a friend about how certain life lessons seem to keep circling back until we finally grasp them. We laughed, but we both knew it was true: God will keep working on an area of our hearts until we let Him do His full work.

I had a vivid reminder of this while talking to my children about a repeated behavior issue. Frustrated, I asked them, “Why don’t you just learn not to do this so we don’t have to keep going through the same thing again and again?”

Almost instantly, God’s Spirit nudged me: “Yes, Courtney… and you have the same problem with Me.”

That moment stung — but it was also a gift. God’s discipline is never wasted. He trains us so that we might “share in His holiness.” The process may be uncomfortable, but the end result is a life marked by righteousness and peace.

Reflection Questions

1. Can you identify a recurring challenge in your life that God may be using to teach you something?

2. How have you been responding to God’s discipline — with resistance or with humility?

3. What would it look like to fully cooperate with what God is teaching you right now?

Prayer

Father, thank You for loving me enough to teach and correct me. Help me to see Your discipline not as punishment, but as an invitation to grow. Give me a humble, teachable heart that is quick to learn and eager to obey. Shape me into someone who reflects Your holiness, and let Your peace rule in my life. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
