Veiled Hearts, Bold Voices

Have you ever met someone who seemed unreachable for Christ? It can be disheartening to watch people move through the daily routines of life without ever looking toward the One who made them — the One who offers salvation.

The Apostle Paul experienced something similar in his ministry to the nation of Israel. He described their understanding as veiled — a spiritual covering that kept them from seeing the truth of the Gospel. In 2 Corinthians 3:12–16, Paul writes:

“Therefore, having such a hope, we use great boldness in our speech, and are not like Moses, who used to put a veil over his face so that the sons of Israel would not look intently at the end of what was fading away. But their minds were hardened; for until this very day at the reading of the old covenant the same veil remains unlifted, because it is removed in Christ. But to this day whenever Moses is read, a veil lies over their heart; but whenever a person turns to the Lord, the veil is taken away.”

Even today, many hearts remain hardened toward the Gospel. In a nation saturated with the message — proclaimed from pulpits, broadcast over television and radio, and even portrayed in films like The Passion of the Christ — there are still countless people unwilling to hear it.

So what can be done?

Paul’s answer is simple yet challenging: Our hope should give us greater boldness. The presence of the veil should not cause us to retreat, but rather to press forward with even more determination. Still, we must remember — it is God alone who removes the veil. Only He can open hearts to the truth.

Our role is not to invent clever tricks or craft marketing gimmicks to “sneak” the Gospel into someone’s life. The Good News is not a sales pitch. It is not a negotiation. It is the truth of God’s Word, and it must be spoken plainly and boldly.

We must still preach:

  • About sin.
  • About repentance.
  • About forgiveness.
  • About the reality of hell.

These truths are not popular, but they are necessary. We speak them in love, trusting God to do the heart work. The veil is His business. Preaching is ours.

Let us then speak with courage, clarity, and compassion — and leave the results in the hands of the One who alone can save.
